Photobiomodulation (PBM) is the use of red and near-infrared light, which is absorbed by endogenous chromophores, triggering biological reactions through photochemical or photophysical events, leading to physiological changes. Photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) is the therapeutic application of PBM which initiates a compounding beneficial metabolic response deep beyond the cells of damaged tissues, helping the patient heal quickly from a variety of conditions.
How long is each treatment?
The treatment time depends on the size of the area being treated as well as the condition. Most sessions are between 3 and 10 minutes.
Will I feel better after one treatment alone?
Laser therapy is designed to be cumulative, meaning pain reduction would occur after several sessions. Some people do feel a slight pain reduction after a single session however, with the majority of treatment applications, patients typically feel noticeable differences after 3 sessions.
How many treatments do I need?
This depends on the nature of the condition being treated. For some acute conditions 1 to 6 treatments may be sufficient. Those of a more chronic nature may require 10 to 15 (or more) treatments. Conditions such as severe arthritis may require ongoing periodic care to control pain as needed.
How often should I be treated?
Normally with a course of 6 visits, a patient will be treated 2 to 3 times a week over 2 or 3 weeks.
What can be treated?
Refer to the chart below. Laser therapy can be applied to a wide variety of conditions.
